FIRST EUCHARIST & RECONCILIATION

After Baptism the next important stage in your child’s faith journey is preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Preparation for these Sacraments is a parish based programme which is run by a team of trained catechists. Children meet with their catechists once a week. A special children’s liturgy for the First Communion children takes place at the 11.00am Mass each Sunday. Attendance at this Mass is a requirement of the preparation programme.

At present we use the “I Belong” Programme published by Redemptorist Publications. It is a programme which requires the cooperation of parents, catechists, children and the prayer of the parish community. As the home is the first and best learning place, parents/guardians are asked to undertake a special role in preparing their children for these sacraments, namely to pray with them, support them in the work they are given to complete at home and accompany them to Mass each Sunday. Regular meetings are held for parents throughout the year. These sessions not only enable parents to support their children but they also provide an opportunity to renew, refresh and rediscover their own faith.

When children are in year three or above, they qualify to join the First Communion preparation programme provided they are attending a catholic school and the family are practicing members of the Church of Our Lady of the Holy Souls parish. Dates for application are announced in the Parish newsletter in June.

Children who are not baptised or who attend schools other than catholic are required to complete a Religious Education Programme prior to admittance to First Communion Preparation. Further details of this programme may be obtained from Fr. Peter or Sr. Margarita.
