“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments” (Catechism of the Catholic Church) Here in Our Lady of the Holy Souls we warmly welcome parents who come to request the Sacrament of Baptism for their child. It is important for us to provide spiritual formation and support for both parents and godparents as they undertake the initiation of their child into the faith of the Catholic Church and the life of this parish community. We strongly recommend that all children should be baptised as soon as possible after birth and not later than six months.
WHAT TO DO
If you are planning a Baptism for your child please see Fr. Peter or Sr. Margarita who will arrange an initial meeting. This first coming together will create an opportunity for us to get to know each other better. At this meeting you will also: • Complete an application form, • be given the dates and times of the preparation course and a possible date for Baptism, • discuss the role of godparents, one of whom must be a practising catholic and be confirmed, • talk about the names chosen for your child and give some guidance as regards a saints or biblical name if you have not chosen one.
THE PREPARATION COURSE
There are two sessions of Baptism Preparation which must be attended by parents and godparents. The first session deals with the theology of the sacrament and the second with the signs and symbols used in the administration of the sacrament and the actual practicalities of the celebration of the sacrament. The Preparation Sessions take place bi-monthly on Sundays at 12.30pm. The celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is usually once a month on Sundays at 12.30pm
BAPTISM FOR OLDER CHILDREN
Baptism for children over 6 years of age must be preceded by a period of instruction and preparation for the sacrament.
